Arizona Senate Panel Quashes Common Core Standards

With all the pressure brought against the state of Arizona's Common Core standards, and Gov. Jan Brewer's rebranded  name change of the Common Core policy that was developed four years ago to "Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards" still was not enough for State Senator Al Melvin (R-Tucson) and a Senate panel to accept the Governor's plan. The Senate Education Committee on February 21 voted 6-3 to bar Arizona from implementing the Governor's Common Core standards.

Sen. Melvin,  formerly a University of Arizona professor and Navy veteran, led his colleagues in successfully voting down a Common Core policy in Arizona. Melvin did state that the idea toward advancing state standards was good, but expressed concerns that Common Core was an effort that "got hijacked by Washington and the federal government."
