Charter School Minority Students Performing Better Since 2009

A study released in June of 2013 by the National Charter School Study, a Stanford University research group, discovered that students of minority ethnicity and poverty level families that attend Phoenix charter schools, as well as other campuses across the U.S., excelled in math, science and other class courses as compared to other ethnic groups. The results of this study is a follow up on the performance comparison of the original study findings conducted in 2009.

Margaret Raymond, Director of the Stanford Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) at Stanford University, said the reason for the upsurge in the improvement of the students was in part due to the closing of other school campuses that were not up to grade "A" schools education performance standards. The results were based on the study that was conducted in 26 states including Colorado, Texas, Illinois and Arizona.

Click here to read press release of CREDO's summary asking legislators for higher charter schools standards and accountability, at the same time continue to build a base about "what plans, what models, what personnel attributes, and what internal systems provide appropriate signals that lead to high-performing schools.", and addressing the argument on whether charter school policy makers should be continuing to close those schools that are low performance.

Arizona Senate Panel Quashes Common Core Standards

With all the pressure brought against the state of Arizona's Common Core standards, and Gov. Jan Brewer's rebranded  name change of the Common Core policy that was developed four years ago to "Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards" still was not enough for State Senator Al Melvin (R-Tucson) and a Senate panel to accept the Governor's plan. The Senate Education Committee on February 21 voted 6-3 to bar Arizona from implementing the Governor's Common Core standards.

Sen. Melvin,  formerly a University of Arizona professor and Navy veteran, led his colleagues in successfully voting down a Common Core policy in Arizona. Melvin did state that the idea toward advancing state standards was good, but expressed concerns that Common Core was an effort that "got hijacked by Washington and the federal government."

Judge Rules Against Arizona Department of Education

An order has been issued by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Dean Fink prohibiting the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) from receiving back nearly $5.9 million in refunds for state aid that ADE claims the Arizona charter schools should not have received, reports the Arizona Daily Star.

The dispute is in regards to Arizona’s Proposition 301, which raised the state sales tax in order to give more funding to public schools, including charter schools Tucson on a per-pupil basis. The court decided the original payments made were within the statute guidelines, and ADE cannot later reinterpret the law.

If the Judges decision had gone in favor of Arizona Department of Education, those refunds would have certainly had a drastic affect on all the students at AmeriSchools Academy grade "A" schools campuses and the quality of education we strive to provide in our curriculum.

The Washington State Charter Schools Association has approved the opening of seven new charter schools by 2015. Seattle will open the first school this fall, First Place Scholars, which is a privately funded grade school for homeless children. The school has been in operation for 25 years as a social-service agency in Seattle’s Central District.

Sheri Day, acting executive director of First Place Scholars said, “What we do and how we do it is expensive, but it works and it works long term.  The name will change. We are going to be a public school. We will have access to public dollars as a result and we will be able to grow and create a space for more children.”

AmeriSchools Academy, an Arizona charter schools, would like to congratulate the schools that received approval and wish them much success in their future of education.
